in the central part of connecticut here and the school, certainly k through 4 that we mentioned. we don't have the identification and the ages of the school children and their names that are being released. what we are being told is that investigators are processing that school now. they will be dealing with the identification of those students and trying to return them as the governor sends connecticut back to their families so they can mourn and grieve their loss at this time. the community just certainly now getting out of the sadness and shock part and this grief heavily starting to set in. what we don't know about the shooter at this time is his exact identification. they're trying to process that information, as well. there are numerous reports that they're trying to figure out the exact identification that they had on him at the time. but the main focus here for law enforcement and for first responders is dealing with those families who have lost those children. 18 who died at that school this morning, chris. two others that were transported to a local hospital and died later and six ad

in newtown, connecticut. anderson cooper 360 starts now. >> thanks very much and good evening. there is only one story tonight. you know what it is. we have new details to tell but and we won't pretend we understand it any better than after it happened. it is a horror beyond words. kids as young as 5 years old. sadly to the names columbine and jonesboro, we have to add newtown, connecticut to virginia tech add sandy hook elementary, the second deadliest school shooting ever. 20 little kids and seven adults and the shooter who took his own life. all in a close-knit quiet community 90 minutes from new york. we will give you the latest information, but what we will not do is repeat the shooter's name over and over again. we don't want history to remember this murderer. we want history to remember the victims, the teachers and the children, those whose lives have been unfairly taken. we have a teamworking on the tragedy and we have soledad o'brien on the scene. there vigils tonight. we will be checking in with her shortly. vigils to tell you about as the people come to grips with what happened.

even just to drive in this morning into this sleepy town of connecticut, a brisk, cool morning much like what we saw yesterday, there is no one on the streets. i saw one lone jogger and the rest just journalists trying to gather information for everyone in the country that has so many questions about what transpired yesterday. we heard there is going to be a press conference shortly. and we have been waiting on that for two hours. i can see the microphones there just about 50 feet away from me so we'll bring our latest questions from officials. we were able to speak to one woman inside a few moments ago. her name, mary ann jacobs. she is a school library clerk. that is her husband after speaking to journalists. here is mary ann's story. she said yesterday morning when she was in with 18 fourth graders in the library, suddenly noise came over the intercom and she heard these rumblings and so she called the secretary and said did you leave your intercom on? and the secretary said there is a shooting. upon hearing that, mary ann left the library, yelled out into the halls and said we'r

that unfolded yesterday in newtown connecticut. 20 children and six adults gunned down inside an elementary school there. first, we have the latest time line emerging from the tragedy at about 9:30 a.m. classes begin at the sandy hook elementary school. it's known as one of the state's top schools. some teachers and faculty members were gathered in the main office for a meeting about five minutes later they hear gunshots and duck under tables. the school's principal dawn hocksprung is her name and school psychologist confront the gunman and become the shooter's very first victims. before she was killed, the principal likely saved many lives there by turning on the school's loud speaker so that everyone could hear and that everyone could take cover in that school. shortly after, the first 911 call started. >> police arrived within minutes. at 10:23 they enter the school and go room to room. they confirm that the shooter is dead. and they start moving children from harm's way. >> frantic parents and loved ones then started to rush to the scene and then later that day, after rewe realized the

in newtown, connecticut. a town in mourning to say the least. the images that we have seen throughout this town are heartbreaking. makeshift memorials on several street corners. everything from teddy bears to candles to flowers and angels' wings. it is a beautiful community here. just so quiet and pristine and you call it because what you can hear about newtown, connecticut, and it is so filled with grief. it is only the beginning, though, as this town prepares to bury those who were killed on friday. there will be so many burials. the first of the funerals begins today at 1:00 p.m. these would beautiful children, jack pinto, noah pozner. it is going to be a tragic several weeks. no one knew that more than president obama who came here to speak to this town at a touching memorial last night. >> surely we do better than this. if there is even one step we can take to save another child or another parent or another town from the grief that'ses have e visited tucson, aurora, oak creek and newtown, communities from columbine to blacksburg before that, surely we have an obligation to try.

. pete, where are connecticut state police focusing today as they try to uncover more behind the reasons of adam lanza? >> well, there's a huge wide range of what they're doing, thomas. they're interviewing witnesses still. they haven't even gotten to interviewing the children yet. that's going to be a very difficult process to do, very delicate one is the way they described it. there were two adult survivors. they have the history of the weapons, the history of the ammunition, all of that to look at. now, the hopes were fairly high that they might have a breakthrough with adam lanza's computer that was at his mother's home at the scene where he shot his mother before this all began. but there's some pessimism about that now because he damaged the computer, took the hard drive out of the computer, damaged that further. they knew that when they got it. they thought well, you know, maybe we can get something out of it but i'm told the initial attempts to get information have been unsuccessful. they will obviously try to continue to work at that. but they have yet found no answer to the que
